Online food ordering service Hellofood, founded by Africa Internet Holding (AIH), has announced a partnership with Samsung at the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S5 in Lagos.

Using Hellofood could not be simpler: you just need to download the app, search for your favourite restaurants in the area and place an order. Your order will be delivered to your doorstep and you can pay cash on delivery to make the process even quicker and simpler. As part of the Galaxy Gift Package, Hellofood has been selected as one of six apps that will be pre-installed on all Galaxy S5 devices for its users.
Emmanouil Revmatas, Samsung West Africa Director, endorsed Hellofood as “the fastest way to order food online from your favourite restaurants” and praised the simplicity of the service.

According to the founders, Hellofood has become the most popular food delivery app on the continent and this latest partnership demonstrates the huge consumer demand for high-quality and easy-to-use apps. Having been operational in Nigeria for just under 18 months, Hellofood is already working with over 300 restaurants across several cities, including Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

“This latest partnership with Samsung is very exciting for us”, said James Gibson, Managing Director of Hellofood Nigeria. “Being featured within the Galaxy Gift Package will help us to extend our reach to an even wider audience, and we look forward to being able to provide a range of new customers with a convenient and easy way to order food online.”

This latest partnership follows a global deal with Nokia to make the Hellofood app available on Nokia smartphones, as well as extensive pre-installation deals with 4 of the 5 top network operators in Africa. Hellofood is fast redefining the food delivery industry as a mobile-driven experience that is continuing to grow at an impressive rate.

Bharti Airtel now second largest telecoms operator in Nigeria…

airtel_nigeria
Bharti Airtel, a global telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Africa and Asia, has further consolidated its market position in Nigeria, demonstrating return on investment for the company in Africa’s largest operation.

Fresh statistics from Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC), the market regulator, show a continued growth trajectory placing Airtel as the second largest telecommunications services provider in terms of customers. This means that Airtel has now leapfrogged Glo to second largest network by customer numbers. According to the report published on the website of the NCC, Airtel Nigeria, as at February 2014 recorded total customer number of 26, 194, 336.00 while Glo, MTN and Etisalat finished at 24, 490, 650.00, 57, 183, 745.00 and 18,119,397.00, respectively.

Congratulating the team, Christian de Faria, Airtel Africa CEO, said: “This is a remarkable feat for Airtel, demonstrating that our investments, aimed at ensuring a superior experience for our customers in Nigeria, are bearing fruit. It is also a clear indication of the trust that a growing sector of the population have started to have in us.” He added: “This achievement has not come easy and I must congratulate the Airtel team in Nigeria. Nigeria continues to be a very competitive telecoms market and our intention is to ensure that we continue to innovate and make life easier for our customers.”
The findings by NCC have corroborated independent research from Credit Suisse, a global financial-services group, which in July last year showed that Airtel’s market share has improved markedly in Nigeria growing by 21.3 percent, in the ten months leading to April 2013. Importantly, Credit Suisse noted that Airtel has the advantage of growing its market share using the existing, unutilized capacity on its network.”
Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Segun Ogunsanya, said: “The recent report from the NCC is a glowing testimony to our collective commitment of delivering value to our customers and also becoming the most loved brand in the daily lives of Nigerians in line with our corporate vision. We are extremely pleased that Nigerians are expressing confidence in our network and we will continue to excite and delight them with innovative and affordable mobile telecommunications solution.
For us at Airtel Nigeria, this is, indeed, the beginning of a new journey to reclaiming market leadership in the highly competitive telecoms landscape and we are totally committed to our quest of offering the best network experience as well as bespoke value offerings,” he said.

Since the launch in 2010, Airtel has invested over $1.7bn dollars to expand network capacity and deepen quality in Nigeria, in a bid to achieve world-class service quality. The company’s launch of its market-leading 3.75G service in March 2012 and the subsequent roll-out, has offered unparalleled, high-speed mobile Internet, across the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.

Nigeria’s Minster of Communication Technology Omobola Johnson

Nigeria’s Minster of Communication Technology Omobola Johnson

From Abuja, Nigeria, the Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, last week called on members of the newly formed National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), to focus on ways for local IT companies to grow.

A report posted on Vanguard identifies members of the NITDA board and includes Chairman Dr. Tosin Ajayi, as well as representatives of the Ministries of Science and Technology, Communication Technology and Education, the Standards Organization of Nigeria and Nigeria Society of Engineers, amongst others.

Minister Johnson urged members to work together to formulate the best strategies to achieve the Agency’s objectives.

She was quoted as saying, “ICT is the heart of global economies and Nigeria is no different. We are committed to leveraging on the tools of ICT for the socio economic development of this country and the inauguration of this Board today is a quantum leap in that direction.”

Noting that the Board featured only one female member, the Minister bemoaned the low inclusion of women in the ICT sector.

Board Chairman Ajayi reiterated the commitment of the Agency to “exploiting the benefits of IT for the greater good of the country.”

Etisalat Advocates Standardization at 2013 CTO Forum

Nigeria’s innovative telecommunications company, Etisalat, has posited that great economies of scale can be achieved through standardization in the industry and this can be obtained when there is cooperation across stakeholders. The company’s Director of Regulatory and Government Affairs, Mr. Ibrahim Dikko made this assertion at the 11th Annual Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) Forum held at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja last week.

The Forum with the theme, ‘Innovation Through Broadband’, was organized by the CTO in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology and co-sponsored by Etisalat. The one-week forum served as a hub of communication technology experts from Nigeria, other commonwealth African nations as well as their international counterparts who deliberated on critical issues bordering on the deployment of a broadband strategy and policy for Nigeria.

During the panel discussion which was facilitated by Dikko, it was established that broadband is indeed a game changer, hence its policy should be implemented in every country. Knowledge-share, as an enabler for broadband deployment, was also acknowledged as a key tool to drive the implementation of laws and regulation in each Commonwealth country.

Speaking further, Dikko highlighted the need for partnerships which will drive new laws and regulations regionally that will spur overall development. “Partnerships within the industry can be more effective if operators place customers at the fore of these discussions and strive to influence regulations or policies that will increase broadband availability and accessibility,” he said. In addition, he said, the CTO along with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) can help the industry by setting the  right kind of standards.

He disclosed that Etisalat has always focused on customer-centricity to endear itself to its subscribers in Nigeria. “The level of growth we have experienced at Etisalat is traceable to our customer-centric and innovative approach to business,” he said.

Minister for Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson in her speech, said that global internet penetration rates have continued to increase, with almost 40% of the world’s population now online. She noted, however, that this number is fewer in developing countries than in more industrialized ones. She expressed the Federal Government’s delight to have hosted this year’s CTO Forum and Council meeting as one of the priorities of the forum was to assess the different stages of broadband development and discover best practice strategies for moving forward.
